Astragal belt fittings HUH?
« on: September 09, 2015, 06:38:36 pm »
Ave!

We were lately presented the photo below as 'Astragal Military Belt Fittings' from a friend in Hungary.

We declined the purchase as we have no clue as to when where or why.

Do any of you know what they are? Avar, Huns...?

Help!

Best to all,

Kevin

I think they are actually much earlier.  Pre-Roman.  Likely Celtic but maybe even LBA.

But why "astragal"?  I see no resemblance to astragaloi.

Ave,

But why "astragal"?  I see no resemblance to astragaloi.

The term 'astragal' simply refers to the shape - not dice.

But they aren't shaped like knucklebones, that's what I meant.  So why "astragal"?

Ave!

Term 'astragal' refers to a architectural shape - Rounds parts with flat parts...

Anyway, here is a link to astragal - https://www.bing.com/search?q=astragal%20shape&form=WNSGPH&qs=SW&cvid=96e11db17d5c48c5a6611f8dea492a52&pq=astragal%20shape&nclid=mwUReOW55SPEWGDbvEPojg%3D%3D&ts=1442873155492&elv=AHz3iwFpE7YmM!u*aJeX2ghvGjLp4uLO6jyVYEyz9dUO

If you look deep enough, you'll find knucklebones included! Who knew!
