My Flavian Favorites
« on: February 15, 2011, 08:28:59 am »
Thanks to all who helped me get started with a gallery yesterday.  I'm very new to the collection of ancient coins, and I am so grateful I have discovered the joys.  I grew bored with American coins within a reasonable price range after a long time collecting, and I had no idea that ancient coins were even available, much less affordable.  Amazing!  I'm also grateful I discovered the Forvm.  Not only was it a great place to get some coins, but the support, advice, and information here in the discussion board has been invaluable.

With the help of maridvnvm and Aarmale, I was able to put a few examples of some of my coins in a gallery.  I decided to start with the Flavians as I have quickly gravitated towards their coins with the biblical connection in putting down the Jewish revolt.  I hope to work on a gallery of Jewish coins next.

My examples are well worn, but I look at that as well loved.  I also apologize for my photography.  I'm still trying to work on that with my existing camera, but it has been a challenge.  All things in time.

Did I mention I was new?  Just a reminder as I am still working on descriptions and attributions.  Some of the descriptions in my gallery were from the dealers or sellers of the coins.  Others were only generally described and I tried to describe them myself using information at the Forum and wildwinds.  If you see an error, omission, or any other problem, please let me know as that is how I will learn.  I did not give diameter or weight as I do not have a scale or caliper yet.

Welcome and thanks for sharing your coins.  I particularly like that Victory reverse on the hemidrachm!

Lucas,

You're off to a great start :)

Yes, hang around here for a while and you will pick up plenty of good advice and info. The best part is having the ability to pick some of the finest minds in the numismatic world and they being more than willing to let you do it :)

Welcome!

Nice coins...  with the early imperials, usually my budget doesn't allow for denarii so I have been a sucker for the large bronzes.

Glad to see another Flavian collector on the boards! I'm looking forward to seeing your Jewish coins, an area I've been meaning to wade into, but I seem to never have the time or money.

If you're interested in any reading material concerning the Jewish Revolt or Flavian Rome, let me know. I have quite an extensive library devoted to them both. lol

Very nice start. :) If you like the Alexandrian tets of Vespasian, you really need to take a look at the Syrian tets (particularly examples from Antioch)! I think you would really dig them! (Nicer portraits and metal)

Ok, I looked yours over:  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=2650&pos=21
I did some other looking at these, and you convinced me.  I think I "need" a Antioch tet to go with my Egyptian example.  That's my problem with collecting: each thing leads to too many more.  At least I'll never be done.   :)

I've added a few of my Jewish coins today.  I'm still working on my photography, and I'll try to add a few more as I have time.  Some of these were already attributed, and others I did myself.  If you see anything questionable or incorrect, please help educate me by pointing it out.

I added another Jewish coin today.  This is one of my favorites as it is one of Jannaeus' overstrikes (Hendin 1149(a)), with some portions of the undertype fairly clear.  Hendin and others speculate Jannaeus may have overstruck the lilly/anchor coins to try and appease the Pharisees by abandoning the Greek "king" for the Hebrew "high priest." Interesting history touched on by this coin.

Hi Lucas

Let me add a beautiful poem in close relationship with your coin from Jerusalem.

Best regards

Alexander Jannaios and Alexandra

Full of their success, thoroughly satisfied,
King Alexander Jannaios
and his wife Queen Alexandra
move through the streets of Jerusalem
with musicians in the lead
and every kind of pomp and circumstance.
The work begun by the great Judas Maccabaios
and his four celebrated brothers
has now been concluded brilliantly,
work relentlessly carried on
among so many obstacles and dangers.
Nothing unseemly remains now.
All subservience to the haughty monarchs
of Antioch is over: clearly
King Alexander Jannaios
and his wife Queen Alexandra
are equal to the Selefkids in every way.
Good Jews, pure Jews, devoted Jews above all.
But as circumstances require,
also skilled in speaking Greek,
even on familiar terms with Greeks and Hellenized monarchs--
as equals, though, let that be understood.
The work begun by the great Judas Maccabaios
and his four celebrated brothers
has indeed been concluded brilliantly,
concluded in the most striking way.

I added a new Jewish bronze this morning.  It's a rather common prutah of Jannaeus, but I'm very proud of it as the obverse is well centered and the inscription is very clear.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=28918&pos=0

The most amazing thing about this coin however, is that it shares the obverse die with another member's coin here.  Over two thousand years ago, thousands of miles away, what are the odds two members of this discussion board would have the same obverse die on such a common coin!

I could have kissed the mail lady today (almost anyway)!  I received my newest, most favorite, and highest grade coin to date.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3416

Republic Denarius, Rex Aretas.  I love the historic significance of this coin, and I love the condition.  Most of my denarii so far are well worn (and well loved by me anyway), but this one is in better condition.

There are some previous discussion threads on this type pointed out to me by aarmale:

My wife does not appreciate my enthusiasm, so I'm glad I could express it here with people who could understand the excitement of seeing the mail come with a new coin on the way!

Nice coins, once again!  This is the first coin I found that shared any die with one of my coins!  And a common prutah no less!
I think you posted the wrong links though. :)

I added 4 new coins to my general gallery (not biblical or Flavian).  These are my persian and republic coins.  All 4 new additions are courtesy the Forvm.  I think the L. Appuleius Saturninus is my favorite.  It's well toned unlike many of my silver coins.  I also like the age/artistic combination if that sounds right.  I'm getting to where I like these republic denarii.

As an offshoot of my interest in biblical coins, I've become very interested in the coins of Nabataea as well.  I added two additions today thanks to the Forvm.  The first is a bronze of Aretas IV with a nice reverse inscription in Aramaic.  The second is a smaller bronze with an eagle on the reverse which may relate to the eagle of Herod or Herod's eagle lepton.  I'm not sure if these have true "desert patinas," but its the closest thing in my collection thus far to that. In keeping with my collection thus far, they are humble, but well loved by me.

New additions coming!  I reorganized my gallery in anticipation of my new coins.  I am posting to the folders instead of the coins, because it seems whatever coin I post to, ends up to be an incorrect link.

Anyway, first up are three new Republic Denarii.  I've come to like the art on some of these denarii, and these three were reasonably priced.  As always, I'm relatively new, so if you see inaccuracies in my attributions, please alert me.  Also, if anyone knows where I can find information behind the issuers of these coins, I'd love to learn more.

New Republic Denarii are here: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3416

Tune in for a couple of other new additions soon.

And two "Greek" coins.  I've had these for a while, and I've not had pictures until today to add to my gallery.  The coinage of "Alexander the Great" is very intemidating to me.  The drachm is from the Forvm, and I understand what it is due to the clear labeling before I purchased it.  For the second coin, I used the seller's description and attribution.  I guess it's a Philip Philip Philadelphos coin if the seller is correct.  I have no idea.   ???

And a Nero tet. from AlexandriaNero isn't really my favorite given his rule.  Also, as I've experimented with different coins, I'm finding I'm really not fond of billon coins from Alexandria.  But, Nero is such an important figure in the early empire, I figured I better have one, and I liked this one well enough.

Also, I though radiate busts was something of the later empire, so I'm still really learning here.

Almost done for today.  This time, three new Flavian denarii.

1.  Titus as Caesar, Eagle on cippus.  Well worn, but I like this coin.  My first, and thus far, only Titus coin from the Flavians.
2.  Domitian as Ceasar, Prince of Youth, Salus.  I love this coin!  Again, well worn versus the coins collected by many of the members here, but just right for me.  I love the reverse.  This coin was a learning experience for me- I learned who Salus was, what a cippus was, and what a patera was.
3.  Vespasian/Pax seated.

All to complement my growning flavian collection.

Not a Flavian, but this may be my favorite coin thus far.  Athenian owl.  Probably late 4th century.  Eye in profile.  Lots of banker's marks.  This is my first owl.  Given the heft, thickness, weight, and feel of this coin in hand, I don't know what I'm going to do with denarii from now on.  I really like this despite the banker's marks.  Ex AmphoraHendin said this coin is depicted in an article by Van ALfen in AJN.  I'm going to try to find a copy and see.  Last coin to add to the gallery for today.

Lucas here is Van Alfen's article you are looking for, and yes. Your coin is number 8 ( not number 7) on Pi-Style types, Plate 6, page 15.
