Hristova & Jekov, Nikopolis Corrigenda
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:09:26 am »
Hello to all friends of Nikopolis coins!

Here we have a second thread about Hristova/Jekov's monography of the coins from Nikopolis. Now we can contribute errors in the description or in the added references in HrJ Nikopolis book. It should be a text only thread without pics, at least only few, I think.
And as we have done in the other thread we should number the errors. I think it would make sense to use the numbers of HrJ's book. Then we would have a good and clear reference.

This thread should not be seen as criticism on this invaluable and highly appreciated work but as an attempt for an even better 2nd. edition.

Best regards
Jochen

Good!  Here is a start. The coin I mistakenly posted in the Addenda thread.

Hristova/Jekov 8.18.48.8.

Caracalla, crescent moon and stars.

The reverse die legend is given as NIKOΠOΛITΩN ΠPOC IC
It is actually NIKOΠOΛIT ΠPOC ICTPON
I am certain that my die matches the one illustrated.

The obverse die legend is given as AV KEC ANTΩNO
My specimen, which I think has the same die, subject to correction, ends in ANTΩN

Here's the post in the other thread:

Next:

Hristova & Jekov 8.17.15.1

Julia Domna, Aphrodite and Eros.

The obverse legend is given as IOVΛIA ΔOMNA. CЄBACT
It is actually IOVΛIA ΔOMNA CЄBA as can be seen on Hr/J's illustration.

Hristova & Jekov 8.17.15.2

Julia Domna, Aphrodite.

Hr/J gives the reverse legend as NIKOΠOΛI-TΩN ΠPOC ICTPOC
It is actually NIKOΠOΛITΩ-N ΠPOC ICTPON as can be seen on Hr/J's illustrations.

Hristova & Jekov 8.26.18.1

Elagabalus, Pan and panther

Hr/J give the obverse legend as AVT K M AVP ANTΩNINOC
It is actually AVT M AVP ANTΩNINOC

A lesser comment.  The reverse legend is given as VΠ NOBIOVPOV ΦOV NIKOΠOLITΩN ΠPO. -> C ICTΠPΩ
and actually, there are two dots, one either side of the exergual text, as:
VΠ NOBIOVPOV ΦOV NIKOΠOLITΩN ΠPO -> .C ICTΠPΩ.

Hristova & Jekov 8.36.35.11

Gordian III, Nemesis

Hr/J give the obverse legend as AVT. K. M. ANTΩ ΓOPΔIANOC
It is actually AVT K M ANT ΓOPΔIANOC AVΓ

They give the reverse legend as VP CAB MOΔECTOV NIKOΠOΛЄITΩN ΠPOC and I/C in right field.
It is actually VP CAB MOΔЄCTOV NIKOΠOΛЄITΩN ΠPOC and I/C in right field.  (with the first E lunate, not straight-backed).

Both of these can be seen in their illustrations.

Is there going to be a thread for Marcianopolis corrections as well?

Hristova/Jekov 8.36.35.5

Gordian III, Nemesis

The second coin shown in the centre column has an obverse die which is not described in the text.

This obverse has the legend AVT K M ANTΩ ΓOPΔIANOC AVΓ (the AVΓ being doubly ligate)

Macrinus, Nemesis-Dikaiosyne.

Hr/J give the obverse legend as AVT K M OΠEEΛΛI CЄVH MAKPINOC
It is actually AVT K M OΠΠEΛΛI CEVH MAKPINOC

The second Π could be mistaken for an E, but it is clearly a Π on my specimen.

Hristova/Jekov 8.23.47.2

Macrinus, snake climbing tripod.

Hr/J give the obverse legend as AVT K M OΠЄΛ CEV-HP MAKPINOC
It is actually AV K OΠΠEΛ CE-VH MAKPINOC

This is partly clear from the two specimens illustrated, and partly from other known specimens such as my own and Pat Lawrence's.

(Added:) This is the same obverse die shown at 8.23.36.4, where the legend is given correctly.

This is clear from Pat Lawrence's specimen.
