not coins but something interesting
« on: December 10, 2007, 10:53:25 am »
hello folks.
iam having some difficulties in id-ing this particular ring for someone. the star on the design looks like some sort of monogram.
not ancient, rather early 1900 maybe?
thanks

I'm not an antiquities specialist, but the design looks like a Macedonian sunburst.

I guess that the star or sunburst symbol, worn on a ring in an ancient context, is probably a manifestation of some branch of sun worship or sun-associated deity (no prizes there). Even perhaps Mithraism. I think it's one of those symbols that probably means a lot of various things to different world cultures; however I have seen Byzantine lead seals with the sunburst / star design. Perhaps more information would need to be gleaned from the actual style of the ring itself rather than just going on the symbol alone. Sorry I can't be more specific :(

My two pence.
