When did Romans stop using "S C" on coins?
« on: June 15, 2022, 11:28:49 pm »
I bought my first batch of uncleaned coins recently. On one large coin, I've revealed *N*TONAVG on the obverse.. From what I can tell, this makes it a coin of Caracalla. On the reverse is a robed female figure holding some sort of staff vertically flanked by the letters SC. No catalogs have a Caracalla coin with an SC on the back. Am I missing something? When did the Romans stop stamping SC on their coins?

You find several coins of Caracalla with SC on reverse in OCRE, eg: http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.crl.511A

Oh, thank you. I think I had been using the obv/reverse text string search incorrectly.

for a brief period, the Ostrogoths allowed the Roman senate to strike coins again.
