Fake denarii question

(1/1)

David Atherton:
I was wondering if the green spots on silver denarii can be faked? If not, are they a good indication of authenticity?

wolfgang336:
From what I've heard, the green spots are just encrustations, sometimes called 'greenies' (by LB). I don't think they can be faked, so yes, it's a good indicator of authenticity.

They can be faked, but IF GENUINE they are a very good sign!  The fake ones are generally less hard and easier to remove than the ancient ones.

nikoledm:
Thank you for this topic.

I was about to clean the green patina on my silver denari - it annoyed me.

Now I will leave it as it is.

Robert_Brenchley:
It irritates me as well; if you're comfortable with it leave it, if not you can get rid of it by boiling in washing soda, which turns it soft and black, and brushing.
