What could this be??
« on: June 10, 2003, 06:46:29 am »
Hi, mates!

I don't expect that anyone of you can help my identifying this coin, I've tryied it myself for half a year without success.
I can't even read the letters, i don't think that they are Roman, probably not greek....  ??? ::)
But there is a quite nice bust/head of a young man on the obverse, which makes me thinking of claudius...
So, if any expert here has a clue what this could be, please tell me! :D

Hi,

Your coin MIGHT be a copper As of Augustus, reverse, the altar of Lugdunum. The reverse would be upside down in your scan. The coin is very worn and the lettering difficult to make out, if my guess is correct it should read ROM ET AVG below the altar.  :-\

First of all, thanks a lot! 8) 8) :) As i mentioned earlier, i didn't expect anyone to have a guess about this coin...
well, i checked out some Altars of Lugdunum in the net, and they look in few details just like my coin, BUT... :-\
but, I can only read the ROM ET AVG if i WANT to read it, which means, I'm only 65% sure about it....what would make me 100% sure is an altar of lugdunum where you can see both arms of the Victoria standing on the left side.
Of course, if your guess is right, it would be a quite crude example...., compared to the one in this picture.
Could you help me (maybe with a look into the RIC?) trying to find a coin, where both arms of the victoria on the left side are visible?

Hi,

I don't have RIC, but both arms are visible on an illustration in the new edition of Sear's Roman Coins and their Values Volume I. Hope that helps, I'm not 100% sure myself, but maybe 85%.

Well, that's enough for me!
Thank you very much, without your help, I would never have been possible to find it out!
If you ever need help with coins of the constantine family or the caesars starting with VAL... or CON..., just let me know.
