Caesarea Maritima Serapis, Elagabalus or Caracalla
« on: August 29, 2021, 06:35:58 pm »
Hi, all.  I have assigned this coin from Caesarea Maritima to Elagabalus, as BMC Palestine 117 or Kadman 83v.  However, the only reference book I have is Kadman, so if anyone has a newer publication such as Rosenberger or Sofaer and thinks it might be Caracalla, please let me know.  The inscription is pretty rough and incomplete, so that doesn't make it any easier, but I have transcribed it as best I can.  Thanks, V-drome

This one is definitely Elagabalus. Only one issue of the type Emperor bust/Serapis is know for Caracalla, and it is much bigger. These of Elagabalus vary in size and style, I am not sure whether they represent different denominations or dates. Sofaer has similar coin to yours, number 75.
