A correction for Marcus Aurelius

A new "barbaric" imitation for Elagabal(?)

Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 16, 3.19g, 16.07mm, 0°
Av. [...] - ANTONINOC
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
Rv. NIKOPOLITWN PROC (from lower right counterclockwise, some letters mirrored)
      Bunch of grapes
Ref.: a) not in AMNG:
cf. AMNG I/1, 2036 (for the original type)
        b) not in Varbanov:
cf. #3799 (for the original type)
        c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
cf. No. 8.26.8.20 (for the original type)
coll. Hoeft

The seller has written Caracalla, but the rev. is known for Elagabal and the comical portrait too reminds rather of Elagabal than Caracalla.

A correction for Septimius Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 27, 10.92g, 27.29mm, 225°
struck under Aurelius Gallus
obv. AV K L CE. - CEVHROC P (HR ligate)
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. VP AVR GALLOV - NIKOPOLITWN PROC I.
Hermes, nude, chlamys over l. shoulder, stg. frontal, looking l., holding kerykeion in l. arm
and in extended r hand purse
ref. a) not in AMNG:
cf. AMNG I/1, 1303 (for the type only, writes in error MARKIANOPOLITWN!)
      b) Varbanov 2611 (cites AMNG 1303, doesn't mention the legend error)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017) No. 8.14.10.6 corr. (same dies, doesn't mention the ligate HR)
coll. Hoeft

The obv. is from the same die as HrHJ (2017) No. 8.14.10.5

Correction for HHJ 8.18.47.14

Caracalla

HHJ 2017 states for the obverse .... ANTWNIN

obv legend: V AK .. ANTWNINOC

There's some encrustation that I do not dare to try remove that might hide the letter M, in that case the legend reads V AK M

reverse same as HHJ

diameter 18 mm

weight 2.9 g

Dear clueless!

Thank you for your contribution. Yes, you are right, it is HrHJ (2017) 8.1.47.14 and should be corrected, obv. legend and bust description. The depicted coin is from my collection. Here is my decription (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-56491):

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 16, 2.44g, 16.06mm, 210°
obv. M AV [KAI] - ANTWNINOC
legend upside-down, beginning at 8 o'clock and running clockwise
Bust, draped and cuirassed, seen from front, laureate, r.
rev. [NIKO]POLIT PROC ICTR
Tripod, central leg entwined by snake in 2 coils r., head r.
ref. a) not in AMNG:
          rev. AMNG I/1, 1604
       b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
       c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015) No. 8.18.47.14 corr. (this coin, incorrect descriptions: obv. legend and bust!)
rare, F+, brown patina, slightly rough

I think your coin is from same dies as mine. And you can clearly see that the obv. legend is upside-down and must be read from outside.

And another correction -- Hr-J 8.25.22.3 -- Diadumenian / Serpent on altar, AE 16, R8 -- this is actually a coin from Prusias ad Hypium (= Gk. PROYSIEWN PROS YPIW) in Bithynia, as this -- second known -- specimen confirms (my coin AE 16, 2.61 g, obverse die-match with RG 61, second photo below):
Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

Dear archivum!

Thank you for your valuable contribution. Another step towards our goal. I must confess that I always was puzzled when I looked at that coin because it has had no parallels in Nicopolis.

I have added the sequential number to your post.

Dear friends of the coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum!

A word before: I'm co-author of the last edition of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum, 2017. Therefore I'm responsible too for all the errors which I now try to correct.

Recently I got a coin of Elagabal from Nikopolis ad Istrum with Tyche on rev. and RW in ex. This coin is in bad state but has led to some corrections: We have altogether only 2 different types with this recv.:

#066

A correction for Elagabal

(1) HrHJ (2017) 8.26.38.12 corr. (ligation not mentioned)
obv. AVT K  M AVRH - ANTWNEINOC, bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
(E and C square, great distance between C and l. shoulder)
= No. 8.26.34.1 (same die), 8.26.38.9 (same die)
rev. VP NOBIOV ROVF(OV) NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICT / RW,
3rd OV ligate (V above O), Tyche wearing Kalathos

#067

A correction for Elagabal

(2) HrHJ (2017) 8.26.38.13 corr. (writes AVT K M AVR, writes "with kalathos")
obv. AVT M AVR - ANTWNEINOC corr.
(E and C rounded, C in contact with drapery on l. shoulder)
               = 8.26.1.7 (same die)
rev. VP NOBIOV ROVF(OV) NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICT / RW,
3rd Ov ligate (V above O), Tyche without kalathos

Both types have the same rev. legend with ligate OV (V above O) and RW in ex. But the depiction is different:
(1) Tyche is wearing kalathos
(2) Tyche without kalathos

No. 8.26.38.25 is identical with No. 8.26.38.13 and should be deleted.

Julia Domna, AD 193-211
AE 26, 9.9g
struck under Aurelius Gallus
obv. IOVLIA. - DOMNA.CEB. (MN ligate)
       Bust, draped, r.

       hands (Caracalla and Plautilla?)
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) cf. Varbanov 2910 (no legends)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017) 8.17.34.2 corr. (same dies, but writes NIKOPOLIT and
PROC IC, and ligation not mentioned)

A correction for Commodus

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 28, 12.09g, 28.36mm, 90°
struck under Caecilius Servilianus
obv. AV - T KAI MAR AVRH - K[OMODO]C
       Laureate head r.
rev. HGEMO KAIKI CERBEILEI NEIKOPO PROC ICT
River god, nude to hips, leaning l., holding in extended r. hand water plant and resting
with l. elbow on overturned vase from which water is flowing down
ref. a) cf. AMNG I/, 1235
      b) cf. Varbanov 2160 (= AMNG 1235)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017) 8.10.32.5 corr. (same dies, writes CERBEIL-I)
coll. Hoeft

On this new coin the rev. legends are well readable and the pics should be exchanged. And we can see that HrHJ (2017) 8.10.32.5 corr. is identical with 8.10.32.14 (writes ICTR in error) too, which can be taken off the list.

Wasn't this number 057 above, except that it is now in your collection?? I did not know that this is a new combination. I have had an example since 2005, which shows that I am behind on my cataloging against your book!

A new die combination (and a correction) for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 28, 11.57g, 28.41mm, 30°
struck under Aurelius Gallus
obv. .AV.K.L.CEP. - CEVHROC P
        Laureate head r.
rev. [VP AVR G]ALLOV - N - IKOPOLITW(sic!) / PROC.
Dionysos, nude, wearing boots, stg. frontal, looking l., resting with raised l. hand on
ribboned thyrsos and holding in extended r. hand kantharos
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1306 var. (has PROC I)
      b) Varbanov 2674 var. (= AMNG 1306)
      c) not Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
rev. No. 8.14.8.5 var. (has PROC I)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.4.6 (same die)
coll. Hoeft

Because the obv. legend of the depicted coin is partially unreadable it is well possible that it is from the same die.
I think the rev. legend of the depicted coin is VP AVR GALLOV too. You can see the round head of the R before GALLOV.
