18 & 19th century fakes of early republican coins
Pawel K:
Dear Colleagues,
I'm looking for examples of 18th and 19th century fakes of pre-denarius Roman Republic coinage. I'm also looking for any mentions about this topic as well in modern literature as in the books from 19th and 18th century.
I'll be very grateful if anyone have any knowledge about this issue!
P.S. I've read Haeberlin.
Pawel K:
Nobody? :'(
mauseus:
Hi,
Have you come across the book Becker the Counterfeiter by George Hill? The narrative is general but some Republican types were faked by him and are included on plate IX.
Regards,
Mauseus
mauseus:
Hi,
There's also some copies by Cigoi made in the period you're looking at. L Brunetti list 80 such pieces in his Opus Monetale Cigoi. Further information in M Crawford Roman Republican Coinage pp. 547-553. Crawford also cites Haeberlin.
Regards,
Mauseus
