SUPER ULTRA MEGA VERDIGRIS!!!!
« on: August 01, 2012, 07:53:13 pm »
This is the worst case I have. Anyone gotten a large amount off with good results....short of mauling the coin? Slowly lifting it with a very sharp tool is all I have done so far

I wonder if something like this would work for that coin?

Might be risky though.  I'd wait for input by others who have actually done it this way, like Salem.

Yes Dino
I am sure that white Vinegar will do well with this type of incrustation .
best regards.

Salem has much more experience than I but..........

I have crossed path with a number of trachys with similar verdigris and I have never felt I did the coin any justice, and fairly consistently felt I should have left it alone, appreciating it for the years it took to accumulate such a mineral deposit and true proof of its ancient origins.

Lots of trachys out there, without such a coating, fewer with, I myself would leave it be.

I cleaned a coin which was as bad if not worse with vinegar. there won't be a trace of patina left, but someone had already stripped my coin in a failed attempt to clean it.

I agree that it will remove the patina, but on a coin like this, I'd rather be able to see the detail.  It won't make it shiny and I think it would be pleasant looking and darken over time.

I don't buy the wiley's arguments that it should stay as is because lots of coins are cleaned only a few have gunk on them.  The same could be said for every ancient coin pulled out of the ground.

I'm obviously not arguing that patina should be removed from every coin.  The huge majority of bronzes should have their patina left in tact for many reasons.  I just think there are exceptions to the rule and that a coin like this is one of the exceptions.

I realize however that it's a matter of personal preference.  Sometimes vehemently so.   :)
