how to cleaned this Trajan?
« on: March 27, 2010, 10:41:58 pm »
How do I clean this Trajan? Dealer pictures! This coin looks like it may clean up very good, but I have little experience in cleaning and might mess it up without experienced help. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like the Quadrans with she wolf reverse, should be a nice little coin when you've cleaned it up. Please post an after picture.

there are some parts with possible bronze sickness, it will be necessary harder tool to remove that dirt, also I am not sure what is under the "hill", but I think bronze sickness is there, as well... let we see final result... good luck!

I am giving this coin long soaks in dw and using a dental brush on it and picking at it with an exacto knife. It will be a long time until it is ready for photo!

     Thank you for recent comment!

PS/Under the hill and the other points you state is red and very hard.

try to leave the red alone as much as possible, you will only make it worse trying to remove it.
All the best,
Nathan

Red surfaces are parts with bronze sickness, so these parts should be removed properly and carefully, and if you have no experience, you should leave them such...
Also, that is reason because owner didn't clean the coin totally... cleaners with experience know what coin is "healthy" and such coins have been cleaned totally,
coins with some problem on surface stay half cleaned... Why? It is attractive coin and someone will buy it, and get lesson about bronze problems in  harder way...
I suppose this coin was not so expensive, but you should be careful with half cleaned large bronzes in the future...
