Law affecting export of uncleaned coin lots???
« on: April 25, 2017, 01:57:18 am »
Hi All,

I've heard from several sources that the ethical uncleaned coin supply will stop due to some government regulation governing the sale of antiques.
Was wondering if anyone else had anything about this?

Which country are you talking about.  There is no universal law on this, each country has its own laws.

From what I was told it is EU legislation.

Saw if first here : - https://www.crustyromans.com/

And then Brandon from ZZ antiques mentioned the same thing when i asked him about availability of uncleaned coins by weight

Yes, the government has succeeded in passing new law that went into effect in March 2016.  It requires all inventories of dealers and collectors to register their collections if they intend to sell them commercially.  So therefore all inventories have been registered as final, and therefore anything that is found/sold that is not part of the official registered inventory is considered illegal and subject to seizure.

Neither CrustyRomans nor ZZ mentions *which* government,
nor precisely what legislation they are referring to. I would not
jump to any conclusions based solely on these two sources.

I expect ZZ may refer to Israeli law, but that is just a guess.

Are you able to offer additional or more precise information? It
would assist all of us, I am sure.

Hi Walter,

To be honest the the only 2 sources I heard it from are www.crustyromans.com and ZZ Antiques.

Though i would ask the experts here (like yourself) if there was any Merritt to this.
Maybe nothing to worry about then

I think the opportunities to buy uncleaned coins are much diminished. The price is higher than before and the quality is lower. It is probably going to get worse, not better. Forum hasn't been able to buy a worthwhile large lot of uncleaned Roman coins for years.
