countermarks ID request on Nemausus coin
« on: March 21, 2014, 04:35:39 pm »
Ave Friends,

I bought this rather interesting set of countermarks on a rather battered Nemausus as/dupondius. There seem to be two impressions of wheels on the obverse, but, funnily enough, they are different from one another. I indicated them with a '1' and a '2'
Can anyone identify them?

Lieber freund,

What a fine and elaborate answer! Thank you!
From the list it is clear the countermarks must dat from the earlier stage of the conquest of Germania. Only in the oldest of the Lower Rhine area settlements (Nijmegen) does the countermark occur. It probably means that it was applied under Drusus or even before!
