THE RULES AND SUGGESTIONS
« on: February 20, 2003, 09:48:53 pm »
THE RULES

1.  HOW TO ENTER:

a.   You must be a registered member of FORVM's discussion board to play.

b.   Go to the following page to buy your coins.  A contest entry is item number UC5.  Each entry participates in only one round or judging.  If you want to try again, you have to buy and clean another group of coins.  You may not have more than one lot of coins entered in the same round or judging.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/catalog/roman-and-greek-coins.asp?zpg=2768

c.  Forum may include more than 5 coins in your entry. If you get more than 5 coins, all coins received must be entered.

d.  After receiving your coins and before cleaning them, post a scan or photo of your coins on FORVM's Discussion Board in the Uncleaned Ancient Coins Contest Board.  Make sure your scans are not wider than 750 pixels.  For better photos or scans, use two scans for the obverses and two for the reverses, so each scan is only two or three coins wide.  If you put all five coins side by side in a single scan the photos will be too small at 750 pixels wide.  Forum frequently gives an extra coin or two in our lots.  Especially if one of the coins is a little AE4.  All coins you receive must be entered in the contest.  The contest includes luck of the draw (two of the three winners are at least somewhat based on luck - good or bad).  Extra coins are good luck and must be included.  When you put up the pictures of your dirty coins upon receipt, put your username and "BEFORE" in the title.  Do NOT include a round number in the BEFORE post title.  Contest round numbers are not assigned to an entry until after the coins are cleaned.  (Moderators please do not make entries sticky until the "AFTER" photos or scans are posted and the completed entry is assigned to the current round.)

e.  After you clean your coins, post a scan or photo of your cleaned coins on on FORVM's Discussion Board in the Uncleaned Ancient Coins Contest Section.  Make sure your scans are not wider than 750 pixels.  For better photos or scans, use two scans for the obverses and two for the reverses, so each scan is only two or three coins wide.  If you put all five coins side by side in a single scan the photos will be too small at 750 pixels wide.

f.   Identification and attribution of your coins may be considered by the members in judging your entry.  Tools for identifying your coins are available at romancoin.info.  Asking for ID help is not allowed until after judgement.

g.  When your entry is complete and you are ready for judgement, modify the first (BEFORE) and last (AFTER) post, changing the title to"Round # - your username " (insert the current round number and your actual username).

e.  Prepare to be judged.

2.  JUDGMENT:

a.  Judging will begin when a moderator of the Uncleaned Ancient Coins Contest Board determines 8 entrants that have submitted cleaned coins for judging, or six months have passed since the last judging, whichever comes first.

b.  A moderator of the Boards will set up three polls one for each of the awards.

c.  The members that answer the poll decide for themselves how they judge.  There is no established judging criteria.  Each member will have their own opinion of what is better or worse, and what is more important or less important.

CONSERVATOR for the best cleaning and preservation
Minimum prize value $25

PROVIDENTIA for the luckiest contestant
For the glory

DAMNATIO for the unluckiest contestant
Minimum prize value $25

d.  Members of the boards may each vote once in each of the three polls.  Members select the winners.  Members do not have to be fair, logical or make sense at all and their judgment is final.  Judging will last approximately two weeks.  A moderator will close the polls anytime during the 24 hour period after the two week judging period ends.  In the event of a tie at the end of the two week judging period, the polls will remain open until one entrant is ahead by two votes.  Members may vote until the polls are closed.

3.  PRIZE SELECTION:

a.  During the week of judgment.  FORVM will post two prizes on the Uncleaned Ancient Coins Contest Board.  Each prize will have a value of at least $25.

b.  The winner of the DAMNATIO award will select a prize by posting their choice on the board.

c.  The winner of the CONSERVATOR prize will get the prize that the DAMNATIO winner did not select.

d.  Winners must provide FORVM their mailing address to receive their prizes (if it is not already on file).

A FEW POINTERS:

SCAN YOUR COINS IMMEDIATLY UPON RECEIPT - DON'T CLEAN THEM AT ALL BEFORE YOUR BEFORE PICTURE.

PHOTO OR SCAN QUALITY COUNTS - IF WE CAN'T SEE THEM WE CAN'T JUDGE THEM.  PUT THE COINS CLOSE TOGETHER, EVEN TOUCHING, IN TWO OR MORE ROWS.  CUT OUT ALL THE EMPTY SPACE.  MAKE YOUR SCAN 700-800 PIXELS WIDE.

ATTRIBUTION COUNTS - SHOW ALL YOUR SKILL.  DON'T ASK FOR HELP WITH ATTRIBUTION UNTIL THE ROUND IS OVER.

GREEN COINS ARE GOOD - STRIPPING PATINA IS BAD, BAD, BAD.  DON'T USE CHEMICALS ON BRONZE COINS.  EVEN SOAKING IN DISTILLED WATER FOR TOO LONG WILL REMOVE SOME PATINAS.  COINS THAT START GREEN SHOULD END GREEN!

ROUND NUMBERS  - DO NOT INCLUDE A ROUND NUMBER IN YOUR POSTS UNTIL YOU ARE DONE AND READY TO BE JUDGED.  DO INCLUDE A ROUND NUMBER IN YOUR POSTS AND MODIFY OLD POSTS TO INCLUDE THE ROUND NUMBER WHEN YOU ARE READY TO BE JUDGED.

Include Extra Coins In Your Entry!

Green Coins are Good Coins
« Reply #2 on: March 10, 2003, 07:10:31 pm »
Bronze coins should be mechanically cleaned.  Use toothpics, dental picks, and brushes - not chemicals.  Soapy water or a very quick rinse in TSP solution are the only chemicals that should normally be used.  If your coin was green when you started, it should be green when you finish.  If even one coin you clean was green when you started and is not green when you finsh, you will probably will not get my vote.

The Right Size Scan Is 600-750 Pixels Wide
« Reply #3 on: March 12, 2003, 11:12:37 pm »
I believe the best size scan for the contest is 600-750 pixels wide, with the coins side by side edges touching and all the empty space cropped out.  Each scan should be no more than three coins wide.  So, for 5 coins there should be two obverse rows and two reverse rows.  That is big enough to see, but not to big to make them difficult to get on the typical screen.

PHOTO's and SCANS CAN COUNT IN THE JUDGING.  JUDGES CAN'T JUDGE WHAT THEY CAN'T SEE!!

PUT COINS IN TWO ROWS FOR PHOTOS
« Reply #4 on: January 13, 2004, 08:41:09 am »
Recent examples have clearly shown that putting the coins in two rows for scanning or photographing is better than one row.  One row of five or more coins lined up across the screen and then reduced to 700 pix wide is too small.  Two rows is better.

Contest round numbers are not assigned to an entry until after the coins are cleaned.  When you put up the pictures of your dirty coins upon receipt, put your username and "before" in the title.  When you add the pictures of your cleaned coins, modify the first post and last post, changing the title to your Round # - your username entry (insert the current round number and your actual username).

Moderators please do not make entries sticky until the entry is complete and assigned to the current round.

If your coins are not completed by the next round,  no sweat,  just  wait until the following round.

your post  wont go  " sticky "  until after you are done cleaning,  so  the next round,  or the round after. ...

once you're done cleaning  and attributing, add then to your post and "poof"  your post will go sticky,  or locked ,  and your entered into the round

hope this helps

To clarify what this means - in total there should be four rows of pics.  Two obverse rows and two reverse rows.  Pics are too small if you line up all the obverses in a single row and all the reverses in a single row.

I posted before pictures on a competition set I received a long time ago. Unfortunatly the coins have been misplaced. Is it okay to order and enter another set?

Yes.  It is perfectly OK to not finish a before set and to order another set.

Just a quick question on the contest.
When we scan in our finished pictures, can the finished coins be retoned, waxed, buffed ect ?
Or just as is cleaned

You can do what you will, and will be judged accordingly. "Re-toning" will probably be frowned upon when the polls go up.

For me re-toning is not a problem. Cleaning that makes re-toning necessary is the problem.

How are the coins selected? Is it permitted to ask, for instance, that certain cultures be included or excluded?

That would defeat the purpose, it's the luck of the draw.
