need help with an abbreviation - PERF
« on: May 14, 2023, 11:17:44 am »
Hi all,

For some reason I can't seem to find a clear reference what PERF stood for on later roman coinage.  In particular, I have it on this Solidus of Valens:

I found one source that claims it may mean PER (petuus) F (elix), but in all the reference books I have like RIC IX, it's listed as PERF and not PER F, which I would expect for 2 separate words.

Is it definitively supposed to be PER F = Perpetuus Felix = Eternally Happy?

you cannot separate PER F from AVG
so
PERPETVVS FELIX AVGVSTVS

Happy is not the correct word.... for Felix... in this case i mean...

1. fortunate, happy, blissful, pleasing, successful, successful, prosperous, skilful, well directed, proper
2. propitious, auspicious, favourable, sanctifying
