Silver 1st century AD Roman belt plate?
« on: December 13, 2022, 07:24:08 pm »
63x61mm.,12.50g.

I assume these are quite often faked so looking for an opinion. As far as I know the 'flower' in the middle is a returning design element on others i've seen. But the silver is kinda looking funny with the patina on it.

Thanks!  +++  :)

I have never seen one like it before. I am not sure it is Roman.

It is similar to the first century ones but these are so rare that I have only seen one or two in real life and never one in silver.

So I don't have enough experience to know whether it is fake or not.

Ave Killian,

Your repoussé belt plate is not Roman, but rather, due to the tamga symbols about the plate,
is much more likely from the Medieval Hungary, Arpad Dynasty,  c.1000-1301 AD.

Here is a true Roman Belt Plate, Lion, Legio IV Flavia Felix, Repoussé, 1st-3rd Cent. AD

"Goodbye, Livia: never forget our marriage!"

I have the opposite view.  The square repousee work plates with round central medallions are known from several provenances 1st century belt plates, so the design certainly matches proper Roman items.  As I noted I don't know enough to know whether they are genuine or not.

By contrast I have never seen a 1st century plate that looks like Kevin's with this animal design.  I have seen similar 4th century plates but the leaves look medieval to me.

Thank you both for the input  +++. It looked interesting but there definitely is alot to gain from faking these so I'm staying away. Bronze stuff isn't so bad after all haha.
