Roman Ae coins with same problems
« on: February 15, 2022, 11:54:44 am »
The Characteristics are of which at least some and often all are found on these fakes:

1. No patina or artificial patina/toning
2. ghost lines which look like the end of a planchet and incompelte dotted border
3. damaged letters and soft details
4. impossible die links (only some have)
5. strange looking style and details (possibly wrong recut details)
6. many have very flat fields and edge cracks and look rather pressed that struck

This one seems to be a fantasy die combination, bought as fake, the attribution of them seems to be wrong.

I have previously posted this ‘die link’ of Philip. As noted in the fake report, A fantasy combination of a Philip I Greek Imperial and reverse from an Alexandrian imperial issue c. 301 used for Diocletian, Maximianus, Constantius and Galerius (RIC 32 a, b and 33 a, b).

Part of a fantastic 'die chain: the reverse die also paired with Diocletian obverse, with that obverse paired with both a tetrarchic Carthage reverse and a Jovian reverse: see following thread https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=123332 - the coin has been in my collection for at least 30 years

Very enlightening gallery. BTW, why the fifth picture is so blurred?

Note also that ma3 and ma4 show the same specimen (first picture is from the seller and the second is from the owner).

Thank you all.
The picture is so blurred because I have increased the resolution and size, it was in a lot with old fakes and possibly authentic coins.
I was outbid and did not save the other pictures only 2 with all of them.

Nice work as always, but shouldn't this be in the fake section?  Get more views there.

Some of these coins are already in the fake section. The others will probably go there when we come to some conclusions.

Hard to be sure, but it could be the same workshop. Style, patina, technology...

I am not sure if they all come from the same workshop, but these Pius fakes seem to me stylistically very similar to Caracalla from post # 1.
