Gallienus Denarius obverse description
« on: December 22, 2015, 10:05:18 am »
I recently acquired the attached denarius which is fairly worn on the bottom of the bust.

In researching the type I came across the same coin in three auctions since 2008. Each time the obverse was described differently

1) diademed and draped bust of Gallienus right
2) laureate and cuirassed bust of Gallienus right
3) Laureate bust r., drapery on far shoulder

I believe description number two is the best fit ( laureate and cuirassed bust of Gallienus right) based on a similar example with a different fides reverse (second image)

Looking for any opinions on the descriptions above or alternative I might have overlooked

Göbl lists your coin as 672t, of type 177.
Other coin is listed as 523k, of type 176.

Bust code for your coin is B1 and for other coin Cv2.

I thought B1 meant a Radiate Right- Which this is not and the 1 refered to a tie over the neck which is not the case

Although at the moment I can't find my chart on Gobl

pekka,
I can only find my copies of Gobl reverses. Can't seem to find my notes on obverses.

Can you expand the B1 and Cv reference to a description.

The similarity I see in the two coins is the ribbon ends. Which on my coin appear the same as the Cuirassed bust rather than the typical head right

Bustcode is explained on pages 11 - 12.

B = Bust, Cv = cuirassed.

Numbers 1 and 2 describe placement of bands.

Thanks,
So the coin is either B2 or Cv2 and I'm leaning towards the Cv2
