Cleaning coins with apple cider vinegar
« on: May 24, 2015, 11:26:12 am »
Hi, I was wondering how I should clean coins with apple cider vinegar. The coin I am trying to clean is a Gallienus animal IOVI CONS AVG issue and it appears to be copper colored underneath the patina (do not cringe, I did it on the edge of the coin). All of the IOVI CONS animal issue coins I could find on the FORVM shop and Wildwinds list that they are billon, except for one copper one listed on Wildwinds where the goat is facing right. First, you should NOT clean coins with apple cider vinegar.  Second, billon can look like copper.  All billon means is, there is a little silver in it and the ancients set the value of the coin in part on the amount of silver in it.

I think apple cider vinegar is being used, or it could be regular vinegar

Nvm, its not vinegar but it is some kind of dental acid. Works wonders on those coins though

Don't use acid unless you know exactly what you're doing and have a specific reason. Softly softly does it!

Firstly.... NOOOOOO! DONT DO IT!!! Any acid will (given time, dependant on the strength of the acid) will remove dirt, encrustations, AND patina.. And leave you with a pitted shiny coin of little eye appeal or value..

Secondly... can't a mod move this to the uncleaned board, which is surely where it belongs...

 Best wishes,

Lee S.

I am very much aware of the risk, and I would only do this to billon coins with a somewhat high silver content (for example, the Claudius II antoninianus in the video) or coins that have a decent silver content, like those Postumus antoniniani and the Victorianus antoninianus as well. I would never use this for bronze or copper coins, as i prefer mechanically cleaning them.
