Hello everyone.

Today I've added two extremely rare AE coins of Domitian, hypothetically assigned to the mint of Nicaea, with flying Nike on reverse.

The editors of RPC new only one specimen of the coin (in BM coll.) with obverse legend ending with ΣEBAΣTOΣ.

In the S2 Supplement a new variant was mentioned, with the obverse legend ending with ΓEP.

My first coin shows the first type legend, being possibly the second specimen known.

The other coin is more like the second type, but slightly different (AY instead of AYT at the beginning of obverse legend).

Since the example cited in the S2 Supplement is not pictured, I don't know whether my coin is a actually third variety or there's been some misreading.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Very rare Domitian Minerva denarius (M2)

Hello everyone.

Today I've added to my gallery a very rare Domitian denarius, belonging to the sixth and last issue of 85 A.D..

This issue was struck for a very short period, just after the eleventh acclamation and before the beginning of the twelfth consulship.

The editors of R.I.C. mention only two specimens, strangely enough both belonging to fellow members of Forum (AM and JM).

Mine appears to share the obverse die with the RIC's plate coin (AM coll.).

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

I've got two nice coins today in the mail: a Domitian Silver Tetradrachm from Tarsus (RPC 1727) and an As of Titus as Caesar with Spes on reverse (RIC 751, Vespasian).

Both lovely coins, I think.

The silver tetradrachms are among my favorite coins, and I have a true passion for river-gods, so I'm very happy having both the flavian issues in my collection.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

As a collector, one of the things that gratify me most is to spot rarities that others do not recognize.

Therefore I was very excited this morning when the postman handed me the envelope containing this denarius of Domitian Caesar with Pegasus on the reverse.

The coin was advertised as mint of Rome, but I had immediately noticed the differences in the style of portrait and lettering, not to mention the small "o" at the base of the neck, which could barely seen in the photo, but that is clearly readable in hand.

Moreover, the portrait of Domitian in the Roman version is unmistakable, with nose and chin particularly accentuated in most cases, as you can see from the close comparison.

This coin belongs to an Eastern Mint, possibly Ephesus, and is apparently of the same dies as the RIC's plate specimen.

The editors of RIC emphasize how the subject is taken from the coinage of Augustus. In the mint of Rome this subject was exclusively minted for Domitian, being probably his commoner coin struck under Vespasian.

As the winged horse was considered a patron of the arts, David Corson the author of the novel "Domitia and Domitian" assumes that the subject was chosen by the future empress, because at that time Domitian was very passionate about literary composition .

I've added to my gallery also two examples of the Roman type (RIC 921, Vespasian) from different dies.

Kind regards

Alberto

Your new Domitian is an obverse die match to one of my coins from Ephesus with a different reverse: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-92370

You're right, David, same die!

Domitian's Pegasus denarii - Rome vs. "annulet" mint
« Reply #34 on: June 12, 2013, 10:16:20 pm »
Flavian collectors will always be happy to acquire denarii from this rare and interesting "annulet below portrait" mint!

The appearance of annulets on some late denarii of Ephesus seems to me very tenuous evidence for assigning this series too to Ephesus, however, even with the addition of (?) to indicate uncertainty!

This series is several years later, and has completely different legends and rev. types, copied from Rome, and completely different style. Those factors should indicate a different mint, the shared annulets probably being merely coincidental.

So I think we should drop RIC's "Ephesus (?)" attribution, and return to that of RPC and BMC: "uncertain Asia Minor mint".

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian PONT denarius (second known?)
« Reply #35 on: June 13, 2013, 09:07:03 am »
Hello everyone.

This happens to be a busy week for my postman!

Today I've received another beautiful Domitian's denarius, with the PONT legend on obverse.

When Domitian succeeded to his brother Titus, he gained the title of Pontifex Maximus, the supreme religious authority in Rome.

In the coinage this title was usually written "P M", but in his very first and rarer issues the engravers wrote "PONT".

This RIC 27 (the auction house wrongly described as RIC 56) is possibly the second specimen known and much well preserved than RIC's plate coin, belonging to the Oxford collection.

In the occasion I've taken new pictures of my previously owned three PONT denarii and I've added them to my gallery.

Kind regards

Alberto

A beautiful coin, apparently from the same dies as the worn Oxford specimen!

PONT on these rare coins of Domitian probably reflects his real status at the time: before claiming the title P M, he probably waited until the relevant popular assembly had met and voted him that title, maybe a month or so after his accession.

For a number of other emperors, the Arval Acts record the meeting of the assembly that voted them the office of P M, a little while after their accessions.

Hello everyone.

Today I've added a couple of middle bronzes (dupondius and as) belonging to the same issue of year 85 AD.

The "Victory and trophy" type is one of those meant to celebrate the emperor's military victories, and was struck for a couple of years only (85-86).

Kind regards

Hello everyone.

Today I've added three scarce coins, each showing the same reverse: one legionary eagle between two military standards.

There is an As of Vespasian and two Domitian Cistophori.

The copper coin was unfortunately harshly cleaned and required proper treatment to avoid bronze disease. I'm confident it is stabilized now.

The cistophori were purchased from H.J. Berk and they came each with a nice C.C. ticket.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

I'm back home from a great holiday in the beautiful France and I found a nice Corinth AE waiting for me.

I noticed that continental Greece coins are more difficult to find than other provincials; actually this is just my second Corinthian.

Having seen the last David's addition, I cannot help posting my spec of RIC 3 too.

Kind regards

Thanks David, I also love the juvenile portraits showing Domitian's beard. They are usually more difficult to find in bronze because of the wear.

Hello everyone.

Some recent addition here.

First one is a denarius of Domitian, a scarce example of the last 85 A.D. issue.

Then an unpublished AE of Domitian from Temnus in Aeolis, so far unique.

Third is a dynastic issue of Vespasian from Tomis in Moesia Inferior.

Last is a Titus AE from Caesarea Paneas in Judaea.

Kind regards.
