Incredible K-P Brooch, with bird and puppies...?
« on: November 24, 2014, 05:43:56 pm »
Ave!

Over the years we have received numerous 'typical' Kraftig Profilierte brooches/fibulae...but never one like this. It's rather shocking in hand.

Copper alloy; 48mm/34.3gm, pin intact

As Shawn has mentioned, there is nothing even close to this in my cheap Hattatt catalogue book. As seen in the multiple photos, there is clearly seen a bird (water fowl)...and what appear to my eyes, a pair of lop-eared puppy dogs on the cross piece above the spring. Apologies for the poor photos...I did the best I could.

Have any of you ever seen anything quite this one before? I'd like some sort of ID, if possible.

Best regards and thanks for looking!

Kevin

It is a Pannonian Anchor Fibula with bird decoration on the bow.

The bird decoration is often stylized or degenerated.  Yours is obviously an early and high quality type with a very realistic bird.  I think the knobs at the end of the spring cover - which are meant to cover the rivets that hold that cover in place -  are just abstract.  Never seen or heard of dogs or puppies or anything on such items.

I would date it to roughly 100-175 AD.
