Another Vespasian
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:29:54 pm »
Hello all,

I would like to share this denarius of Vespasian minted in 73 AD. The reverse depicts an oak wreath that was bestowed upon Vespasian by the 'senate and the people of Rome'. The occasion for such an offering is not known, although the BMCRE speculates (p. xxxvi) it could have been the 'Vota quinquennalia' which was paid the same year.

The portrait is above average IMHO.

RIC 514 (C)
Rome mint, 73 AD
Obv - IMP CAES VESP AVG CEN; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev - S P Q R in wreath

David,

I will go a bit further and say that that portrait is WAY above average. Very life-like!

Nice pick-up!

Now that's my kind of coin! It simply drips character as only a good ancient can. The kind of addition that makes collecting such a wonderful thing.

Best Regards,
Steve

It is indeed a beauty!  I have looked over hundreds of his denarii, and his faces, in particular, on the portraits of many of those coins are not as lovely as yours is IMO.

Best, Noah
