Thanks Tracy.

I also think that their designs are interesting, I think that the abstract designs must be deliberate rather than the inability to copy the original coin design. It's odd though how the designs degraded over the years. Perhaps though, if the coins were used primarily as offerings to the gods, accuracy of design was not thought to be necessary or important.

I like both these coins, especially the Iceni and your explanation of these issues.

New Greek - and the smallest coin in my collection. I can't imagine how it managed to survive for the last 2500 years.

Thanks Tracy and Jay. If nothing else it is conclusive proof to me that the die sinker must have used some form of magnification to enable him to engrave the design. I almost needed a magnifying glass just to pick it up.  ;D

Out of curiosity, did you purchase it in 2022, or take delivery of it in 2022? :)

I actually took delivery of it on 30th December 2021, but since I didn't get round to photographing it until this morning I thought that was near as damn it to 2022 for my post.  ;D

Wow, doesn't time fly. I hadn't realised that it's been almost a year since I posted any updates here on my gallery.

I bought my first Byzantine coin in June last year and have since started a small gallery of Justinian I issues, the last one being a scarce "Victory" Decannumium struck in Carthage. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=179163

I have also added a few Roman coins, amongst others, throughout the year to my "Britain - Hammered" coins gallery. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6781

These are the two galleries that are taking up my attention at the moment.

Regards and Merry Xmas,

Alex

All very nice, I love Celtic horses. Historically, the Severus coin is super interesting, as well as lovely design.

Thanks Virgil. I have found this gallery a really interesting one for me seeing how the coinage in Britain has evolved over time. And, although there are massive gaps in it, I have learned a lot from collecting the coins that are in it as many of these coins were never in my radar for most of my collecting life. I had always been focused on Roman coins but now I am fascinated by those other periods and wish I had become aware of them sooner. The Byzantine coinage is another collecting area that is completely new to me, but there I am strictly limiting myself to the coinage of Justinian.

Alex, I totally get it, my interests are so wide it can be a hindrance, but I have accepted it. All coins are interesting in their own ways. British hammered is an area I love, but I really don't buy coins in that category. That doesn't mean I don't like them. LOL. My interests with coins I do buy is too wide, but I will just keep getting the coins I love when I find them and can afford them. Your gallery is a great one.

Thanks Joe, I thought I'd have lots of time on my hands once I retired to just sit back and relax but it is only now, sixteen years later, that I am finally managing to find a few precious moments to pursue my hobby.  ;D

It's never too late Alex... ;) :)
I would have been retired for more than 12 years, but the University and research are reactivating again and again, so numismatics sometimes has to wait... :( :azn:
