Correct attribution? Oil Lamps
« on: December 19, 2016, 05:13:50 pm »
Hi guys.  Well I purchased my first 2 terracotta oil lamps

I think the first one is correct.  Roman, 1st century AD.  Amphora on top.  It is very similar in shape and size.

The second one I'm not so sure about.  Purchased as "Herodian" style 1 century BC-1 century AD.  Decorated with vines, grapes and shells?.  Looking online it's shape resembles more of a Byzantine piece:

Any help with the "Herodian" lamp would be much appreciated.

The second one is definitely not of the Herodian style.

Herodian lamps are all pretty much of the same basic design, with absolutely minimal ornamentation...if any at all.  They were generally used by the Jewish populace, and since Jewish law frowned upon depiction of anything that could be considered a "graven image", most were very plain.

I don't have access to my books at the moment, but if no one else posts a more definitive opinion, I'll try to find a lamp similar to yours in them, tomorrow.

Thanks!  That's exactly what caused my concern about attribution.

These were both part of the David Liebert estate.

Hi Jay,

     Sorry for the intrusion.

I knew Dave Liebert many years ago. He was over my house several times. We spoke on the telephone a few years ago. Did he die?
He was to oil lamps as I am to scarabs. When I was in Egypt, I found an unusual oil lamp for him. It was a multi light one in the shape of a foot. I did not give the guard "baksheesh" fast enough, so he knocked it out of my hand and smashed it. So much for the guards in Egypt.
Dave was one of our "gang". I'm sorry to hear he passed.

Russ

Hi Russ,  yes unfortunately he passed away.

I never met him but knew of him.  Most of his collection is being sold so I thought it would be good to have a few of his pieces.  I think this one was misattributed at some point...
