Description

 

Denarius of Commodus. Minted between 186 and 189 A.D. VF+. 3,3 gm.

 

Obverse: M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT. Laureate head of Commodus, facing right.

 

Reverse: OPTIME MAXIME, with C V P P in the exergue. Jupiter, father/king of the gods, stands holding a lightning bolt and a reversed (inverted) spear. The legend invokes a blessing for Commodus from Jupiter.
