Sestertius of Commodus. 16 gr. Minted in 186 A.D. This coin refers to the
unity of purpose among the legions, which enabled Commodus to suppress
a purported plot by the Praetorian Praefect, Perennis, in 185 A.D. Actually,
Perennis was no doubt quite corrupt, and a detachment of regular troops
from Britain marched on Rome, to accuse him of treason. Rather than risk a
mutinery, Commodus had Perennis executed, and claimed as justification
that the Praetorian had been planning to place his own son on the throne.
