32 pages of Descriptions followed by
32 pages of Plates (450 coins)

Though not strictly part of the SNG series this book covers similar territory and is well bound and will not fall apart easily.  It is almost A4 size (about an inch short for some strange reason).

Descriptions consist of;
Obverse description (and any letters)
Reverse description (and any letters)
Metal type or value (e.g. stater)
Weight
Die orientation (as a clock face arrow)
Approximate Date

I have to admit that I don’t like the method of having all the descriptions at the start followed by all the plates at the end as it involves a lot of unnecessary page turning. This book really only illustrates one or two coins from various Greek cities as well as an example of the Roman Imperial series from the more important emperors up to Honorus (about 75 coins here).  There is also a section of Egypt under the Romans covering about 20 coins.  The photographs are good (if a bit dark) and it is easy to identify the detail.  The most covered section is that of Alexander III with about 40 tetradrachms.

My main problem with this book is that it has no real focus. I’m not really sure why anyone would want to buy it as it doesn’t cover any particular area well enough.  It may have some use as a general guide and even as a legend checker but overall I can’t see what you could really obtain from it.
