AR Denarius of C. Norbanus 83 BC., Roman Republic - diademed head of Venus right, wearing single earring and pearl necklace, control number XXXI behind, C.NORBANVS below / fasces between grain ear on left and caduceus on right (3.76 grams, 21/19 mm) Rome mint 83 BC., Sydenham 739 Norbana 2, Very fine, area of flat strike, estimate $160

The reverse type is probably an allusion to the moneyer"s father and the part he played in Sicily during the Social War, when he raised troops, organized a fleet, and provisioned the town of Rhegium.
In 83 BC., Sulla returned from Greece and defeated the popular forces led by the consul Norbanus (father of this moneyer).
