Eudoxia

Please add updates or make corrections to the NumisWiki text version as appropriate.

EUDOXIA (Aelia) was married to Arcadius on 27th April, A.D.395. The daughter of Bauto the Frank, she wielded considerable influence over her weak husband, much to the disgust of many high ranking Romans, particularly those in the Church. She was the virtual ruler of the Eastern Empire from around A.D.400 until her death in childbirth in A.D.404 (October). She was the mother of five children, including amongst them, the future emperor Theodosius the Second and his sister Pulcheria.

EUDOXIA (Aelia) or EUDOCIA, daughter of Leontius, an Athenian, born about A.D. 393, married to emperor Theodosius the younger (Theodosius II) A.D. 421. Being separated from her husband, she took up her abode at Jerusalem, where she died A.D. 460.- The coins asigned to this Augusta are rare in small brass; in gold and silver very rare indeed.
[For an explanatory note in reference to the above and preceeding empress, see Akerman, Descript. Cat, ii. 357] - See EUDOCIA.

EUDOXIA (Licinia) daughter of Theodosius II and Aelia Eudoxia, wife of Valentinian III, born at Constantinople A.D. 423; a widow in 455. She called Genseric to Rome to avenge herself of Petronius Maximas, who forced her to a marriage with him, after assasinating Valentinian III; Rome was pillaged; Eudoxia carried away to Carthage, but afterwards returned to Rome, 462, and died there. Her coins (in gold only) are of the greatest rarity. Style- LICINIA EVDOXIA P. F. AVG.
