Sigla

Sigla is the plural of siglum| or siglon|, which in general use means, a letter or other symbol that stands for a word or name. In classical numismatics, the term sigla is used to describe control symbols, particularly on Byzantine and medieval coins. On coins, sigla often include letters but may also include monograms, pellets, stars, crescents, crosses, lis, annulets and other symbols. Sigla may indicate responsible magistrates or mint officials, but the meaning of most (or all?) has been lost to history. Samples of sigla are illustrated in the figures below (from Bendall Sigla).
