Pattern-blown

A decorative glass blowing technique using a pattern mold to impart a surface pattern, but not the shape of the vessel.  The shape of the vessel was usually free-blow.  The technique was used to create honeycomb patterns and expanded ribs.   Expanded ribs could be left vertical or twisted into spiral ribs.   The technique was probably invented by Syrian glass blowers in the late third to early fourth century and is still popular today.  It was probably not used by ancient glass makers in the West.
