HIPPOPOTAMUS (river horse). A huge amphibious animal, inhabiting the Nile, and also found on the Ganges.  On coins which serves to symbolize Egypt (see the word NILVS). The figure of this remarkable beast occurs on several coins of the two Philips, and also on those coins of Otacilia Severa, with the legend of SAECVLARES AVGG. -Spanheim (Pr. i. p. 175) shows when this fluvial monster was first exhibited at Rome in the public spectacles.
