Antinous. - Hadriani catamitus: a young Bithynian, with whom Hadrian was infatuated, drowned in the Nile about 130 A.D. Hadrian, was seen as wise and meritorious in his public conduct. but in this instance he is suspected of intentionally causing the death of his favorite. After Antinous' death, Hadrian ordered the most extravagant distinctions rendered to his memory. A temple and a city were dedicated to his worship! The Greek provinces, always ready to flatter their imperial masters, struck Antinous' image on their coins. There are no coins of Antinous with Latin legends struck by the Roman mint or with the mark of Senatorial authority.
