Venatio (hunting) the name given to an exhibition of wild beasts which fought with one another and with wild men who were called Bestiarii. This was a favourite entertainment with the Romans (see Smith, Diet of Antiq., s.v. VENATO) and is represented on the coins of Livineia, on Imperial coins of Serverus and Caracalla (Madden, Num. Chron., 1861, N.S., vol. i. p. 101) [LAETITIA AVG] and some of the Coutorniates (Sabatier Med. Contoru., pl. iv., No. 1; pl. ix. and x., No. 1) [CONTORNIATE COINS]
