VIA TRAIANA S C S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI - Female lying on the ground to left, holding a wheel on her knee and a reed. On gold, silver, and bronze coins of Trajan.


This coin commemorates the new road constructed by Trajan at his own expense from Beneventum to Brundusium which came to be considered Via Appia (Appian Way), of which it took the place. This coin was restored by Gordian III in silver.
