Justin Sabatier (1792-1870). Description générale des monnaies byzantines frappées sous les empereurs d'Orient depuis Arcadius jusqu'à la prise de Constantinople par Mahomet II. Paris: Rollin et Feuardent, 1862.

Originally a supporter of Napoleon, Sabatier moved to Russia where he became a respected scholar of archaeology and numismatics.  While there, he published three important titles on Roman and Byzantine numismatics: Iconographie d'une collection choisie de cinq mille médailles romaines, byzantines et celtiberiennes in 1847; Souvenirs de Kertsch et chronologie du royaume de Bosphore in 1849; Production de l'or, de l'argent de du cuivre chez les anciens et hôtels monétaires des empires romain et byzantine in 1850. After the Crimean War, he sold his coin collection (most are now in the Hermitage collection) and returned to Paris.

In Paris, Sabatier published many articles, but his greatest contribution is this two-volume work that appeared in1862. It remains one of the most fundamental studies of Byzantine coins.
