SOVSTI. - A brass coin of Faustina senior bearing these six letters, followed by the senatorial authentication, S.C. and having for its reverse type a torch in each hand, is given in the Memoires de Trevoux, a from the collection of P. Chamillart. It is accompanied by various attempts at interpretation - the productions of as many learned writers, whose conflicting opinions Rasche has, without comment, recapitulated; but respecting which on account of their far-fetched extravagance or their ludicerous absurdity, SOVSTI is evidently, Eckhel says, an unhappy blunder of some careless mint-master, similar instances of which are not unfrequent on the reverses of Roman coins.
