    MEDALET, an appellation given by Pinkerton to a curious though not uncommon class of Roman pieces not intended for currency, which consists of small coins, or missilia, scattered among the people on solemn occaisons; those struck for the slaves in the Saturnalia; private counters for gaming; tickets for baths and feasts; tokens in copper and lead, and remains of a like kind.
