MARCIANVS or MARCIAN (Flavius Valerius Marcianus), born of humble parentage in Thrace, or in Illyria, but an accomplished soldier, he was honoured in marriage with the hand of Pulcheria, sister of Theodosius the Second, who proclaimed him Emperor of the East in A.D.450. From that time to the end of his reign, seven years later, he preserved the peace and integrity of the Empire; refused to pay tribute to Attila; destroyed paganism; favoured the Christians; and died regretted, at Constantinople in A.D.457, supposed to have been poisoned, at the age of 65. - All his coins are of the highest rarity, and on them he is called D N MARCIANVS P F AVG.
