JULIA MAMAEA, daughter of Julia Maesa, sister of Julia Soaemias, and mother of Severus Alexander. She was married to Geenesius Marcianus, by whom she had Theoclia and Severus Alexander. On Roman coins she is honoured with the title of Augusta (A.D.222). She was instrumental in conciliating the good-will of the soldiery in favour of her son Alexander and, helped by her mother Julia Maesa, she promoted his adoption to the Empire.
But she was ambitious and ruled under her son, even accompanying him to the Persian War, and her avarice caused her to commit acts of injustice in his name.
Julia Mamaea was murdered along with her Imperial son in A.D.235.
Her silver coins are common. Sestertii and dupondii are very common but asses are rare.
Her gold coins are of the highest rarity. On these she is styled IVLIA MAMAEA AVG MAT AVG. On the reverse is sometimes MATER CASTRORVM.
