GROUPS

Early Imitatives. 1- 97.

Group I. 98 - 234. Prokopov class AA.

The coins of this group are issue of the Roman administration in the province of Macedonia. I Prokopov calls them "Tetradrachms of the Thasian type." Many authors incorrectly identify them as original Thasian coins, due to the relatively good style and the correct inscriptions. The effigy on these coins is very large, in comparison with that of the original coins, and occupies the entire flan.

Group II. 235 - 329. Prokopov class AB.

Same characteristics as group I. The only difference is obverse style, primarily of Dionysus ' hair, taenia, and flowering ivy. This group has more edge test cuts.

Group III. 330 - 332. Prokopov class AC.

Same characteristics as group II.

Group IV. 333 -339. Prokopov class BB, BBX, BBV.

Just like the first groups, the definition of group IV is based on the style of the obverse. The difference is in the portrait of Dionysus ' and the arrangement of his hair. The end of the group, 393 - 394, Prokopov class BBX, and 395, Prokopov class BBV, are somewhat barbarized imitatives with the same peculiarities as Prokopov class BB.

Group V.
