CERBERUS - the canine guard of the infernal regions, whom Hercules dragged forth from his dread abode, and forced to see the light of day. The three heads of this monster were said to signify the power of Pluto over the three elements of water, earth, and air. -  A silver medaillon of Hadrian has the figure of Pluto, with Cerberus at his feet. But on a small brass of Postumus, "the dog of hell" is represented as conquered by Hercules. The legend of this rare coin is HERCVLI IMMORTALI, and the type shews the fabled son of Jupiter and Alcmene performing his twelfth and last labour, the enchainment of Cerberus. - See Revue Numismatique, T. vii. Annee 1844, pl. viii.
