CARPI, a barbarous people of European Sarmatia, near the Danube. In the reigns of Maximinus, and of Balbinus and Pupienus, they gave rise to the Scythian war. They were subsequently repulsed by Gordianus Pius; and finally routed by his successor Philip, one of whose coins, allusive to the event, bears the legend VICTORIA CARPICA.
