BUTEO - the Latin name of a bird of the hawk genus, was a cognomen of the Fabii. Pliny says (L.X.C.8) Buteonem (accipitrem) hune appellant Romani, familia etiam (Fabiorum) ex eo cognominata, cum prospero auspicio in ducis navi consedisset. On a common denarius of the Fabia gens, ner th eepigraph C. FABI. C. E. appears a bird which, says Eckhel, is doubtless the Buteo. v.p. 137. Morell Thes.
