Obverse

Definition for part of a coin: for Roman coins the obverse is normally the side of the coin having the ruler's portrait. Hence the this side of the coin is also often referred to as "heads." For all ancient coins the obverse is technically the side of the coin that sat or was mounted in the anvil for striking, and the reverse the side or the coin actually struck by the hammer.
