Mariniana

MARINIANA, the second wife, as it is belived, of Valerianus, and the mother of Valerianus Jun. - This princess is known only through the medals on which her name as DIVA MARINIANA appears, and from which it is inferred that she died at the beginning of Valerian's reign. It is still a matter of doubt whether she was the wife of Valerianus; but she certainly was of his family. Her silver coins, or rather billon, are very rare, on the reverse of which we see a peacock, the symbol of her consecration. The brass are still rarer. See Akerman's note on Mariniana. |
