AE (Æ)

AE is a symbol for bronze and other copper alloys. AE is often used with a number indicating the coins size either in millimeters or using the following scale:

AE1 = bronze coin over 25mm
AE2 = bronze coin 21mm – 25mm
AE3 = bronze coin 17mm – 21mm
AE4 = bronze coin less than 17mm

When the diameter is given in millimeters, it is usually the maximum diameter.

AE27 = bronze coin with a maximum diameter of 27 millimeters.
AE22 = bronze coin with a maximum diameter of 22 millimeters.
AE18 = bronze coin with a maximum diameter of 18 millimeters.
AE9 = bronze coin with a maximum diameter of 9 millimeters.
