Edward A. Sydenham was the author of several books on ancient Roman coinage which are still regarded as standard reference works. He lived in Ivy Cottage from his retirement in 1942 until his death in 1948. The two people in the photo are his granddaughter Elizabeth Millward and her sister. The Vespa scooter belonged to Elizabeth Millward's mother. The dog was called Muffin.
