Gallery of Holed Coins - Fifth Century Roman

My holed ancient coins page gives an overview of different types of holed coins. These are my holed coin galleries:

Hellenic CoinsRoman Republican and Augustan CoinsFirst Century Roman CoinsSecond Century Roman CoinsThird Century Roman CoinsFourth Century Roman Coins — Fifth Century Roman Coins (this page)Byzantine or Romaion Coins of Later CenturiesOther Holed Coins of Varying Origins and Times

This page is not very well populated. Coins of the tag end of the Roman empire tend to be in poor condition and scarce, or rather expensive. So the bronze of Arcadius has been placed here instead of on the 4th Century page to help fill out the numbers!

Holed bronze AE2 of Arcadius Bronze AE2 of Arcadius,
383-408 CE.
24mm,
4.54 grammes.
This unusual coin is an overstrike – a coin of Arcadius made using an existing coin of Theodosius II instead of a fresh, blank flan. The Emperor's unusual hairdo is actually part of the design of the older coin. There's more about this coin on my unique coins page. The hole is large, slightly irregular, and placed sort of near the centre, and it's not obvious why it was made. Perhaps to string the coin up at the mint, as a demonstration of how not to do it ..
Holed and looped bronze AE4 of Honorius Bronze AE4 of Honorius,
408-423 CE.
15mm,
1.51 grammes.
This little bronze coin of Honorius has been holed and the hole still contains a loop, which looks to be made of brass wire. The hole is as patinated as the rest of the coin, so may be the same age, but the loop, which looks like brass, is not. Either the brass has not reacted to its surroundings in the same way as the bronze of the coin, or the loop is more recent.
